Treatment and prevention of Leprosy

TREATMENT:
Multi-drug therapy (MDT) and combining all three drugs(dapsone, rifampin, and clofazimine) was first recommended. Because this treatment is quite expensive, it was not quickly adopted in most endemic countries. MDT remains highly effective and patients are no longer infectious after the first monthly dose. The first was a 24-month treatment for multibacillary (MB or lepromatous) cases using rifampicin, clofazimine, and dapsone. The second was a six-month treatment for paucibacillary (PB or tuberculoid) cases, using rifampicin and dapson. Surgical techniques, such as for the restoration of control of movement of thumbs, have been developed.

PREVENTION:
A single dose of rifampicin is able to reduce the rate of leprosy in contacts by 57% to 75%.
BCG is able to offer a variable amount of protection against leprosy as well as against tuberculosis.

What is Leprosy and it’s Symptoms

LEPROSY:
Leprosy has affected humanity since at least 600 BC.it is also called as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae.
symptoms:
Patients with this chronic infectious disease are classified as having paucibacillary Hansen’s disease (tuberculoid leprosy), multibacillary Hansen’s disease (lepromatous leprosy), or borderline leprosy.Recently, leprosy has also emerged as a problem in HIV patients on antiretroviral drugs.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Pneumonia

DIAGNOSIS:
Diagnostic tools include x-rays and examination of the sputum.A complete blood count may show a high white blood cell count, indicating the presence of an infection or inflammation. In some people with immune system problems, the white blood cell count may appear deceptively normal. Blood tests may be used to evaluate kidney function (important when prescribing certain antibiotics) or to look for low blood sodium. Low blood sodium in pneumonia is thought to be due to extra anti-diuretic hormone produced when the lungs are diseased.

TREATMEMT:
Antibiotics for hospital-acquired pneumonia include vancomycin, third- and fourth-generation cephalosporins, carbapenems, fluoroquinolones, and aminoglycosides. These antibiotics are usually given intravenously. People who have difficulty breathing due to pneumonia may require extra oxygen. Extremely sick individuals may require intensive care treatment, often including incubation and artificial ventilation.

Causes and Symptoms of Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an inflammatory illness of the lung. Frequently, it is described as lung parenchyma/alveolar inflammation and abnormal alveolar filling with fluid.

CAUSES:
Pneumonia can result from a variety of causes, including infection with bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites, and chemical or physical injury to the lungs. Its cause may also be officially described as idiopathic—that is, unknown—when infectious causes have been excluded.

SYMPTOMS:
Typical symptoms associated with pneumonia include cough, chest pain, fever, and difficulty in breathing.Other possible symptoms are loss of appetite, fatigue, blueness of the skin, nausea, vomiting, mood swings, and joint pains or muscle aches.

Causes and Treatment of Colitis

Filed under: Health Articles, colitis — Tags: , , — Ashwin Kumar @ 1:56 pm

The exact cause of the condition is unknown, but researchers believe that there are a
number of factors involved. These are listed below.
1.Environmental causes:
Where, and how, we live also seems to play a role in the development of the condition. The evidence for this is that the condition is much more common in certain parts of the world - namely, urban areas in northern parts of Western Europe and America. A number of environmental factors have been suggested including diet, air pollution, cigarette smoke and hygiene. However, no factors have been positively identified.
2.Immune system:
Some researchers believe that a viral or bacterial infection triggers our body’s natural defence system against infection, the immune system. The immune system responds to the infection by causing the inflammation associated with ulcerative colitis, but for some reason, but the immune system does not ‘turn off’ once the infection has passed, and continues to cause inflammation.

TREATMENT COLITIS:
Once the diagnosis is confirmed, then be referred to a gastroenterologist (a doctor who specializes in conditions of the digestive system) so the severity of  condition be assessed, and a treatment plan drawn up.  The severity of the condition is judged using a number of factors, including:
how many times you are passing stools, whether those stools are bloody, whether  have symptoms of fever, how much control  have over the bladder, and  general well-being.Mild to moderate cases can be treated on an out-patient basis (meaning treatment can be carried out through a series of appointments at a hospital or clinic) or at home. More severe cases will require admission to hospital.
There are two types of treatment:
managing active ulcerative colitis - treating the symptoms until they go into remission,
andmaintaining remission - using treatment to prevent the return of symptoms.Managing active ulcerative colitis
There are three main types of medicines that are used to manage active ulcerative colitis
aminosalicylates, steroids and immunosuppressants.
1.Aminosalicylates
The first treatment option, for mild to moderate ulcerative colitis, is an aminosalicylate. Amniosalicylates help reduce inflammation. They can be taken: orally - as a tablettopically - as a cream rubbed into the affected area,as a suppository - a capsule that you insert into your rectum where it then dissolves, andthrough an enema -where fluid is pumped into your colon.

Types of Angina

Angina

Angina

Angina is classified in one of two types:

1) Stable angina or 2) Unstable angina.
STABLE ANGINA:
Stable angina is the most common type of angina, and what most people mean when they refer to angina. People with stable angina have angina symptoms on a regular basis and the symptoms are somewhat predictable (for example, walking up a flight of steps causes chest pain). For most patients, symptoms occur during exertion and commonly last less than five minutes. They are relieved by rest or medication,
such as nitroglycerin under the tongue.
UNSTABLE ANGINA:

Unstable angina is less common and more serious. The symptoms are more severe and less predictable than the pattern of stable angina. Moreover, the pains are more frequent, last longer, occur at rest, and are not relieved by nitroglycerin under the tongue (or the patient needs to use more nitroglycerin than usual). Unstable angina is not the same as a heart attack, but it warrants an immediate visit to your healthcare provider or hospital emergency department as further cardiac testing is urgently needed. Unstable angina is often a precursor to a heart attack.
CAUSES:
The most common cause of angina is coronary artery disease. A less common cause of angina is spasm of the coronary arteries.
DIAGNOSIS:

The electrocardiogram (EKG) is a recording of the electrical activity of the heart muscle, and can detect heart muscle which is in need of oxygen. The EKG is useful in showing changes caused by inadequate oxygenation of the heart muscle or a heart attack.
The accuracy of exercise stress tests in the diagnosis of significant coronary artery disease is 60% to 70%. If the exercise stress test does not show signs of coronary artery disease, a nuclear agent (thallium) can be given intravenously during exercise stress test. The addition of thallium allows nuclear imaging of blood flow to different regions of the heart, using an external camera. A reduced blood flow in an area of the heart during exercise, with normal blood flow to the area at rest, signifies significant artery narrowing
in that region of the heart.
CT coronary angiography is procedure that uses an intravenous dye that contains iodine, and CT scanning to image the coronary arteries. While the use of catheters is not necessary.

What is Angina pectoris

Angina

Chest pain is a common symptom that is caused by many different conditions. Some  causes require prompt medical attention, such as angina, heart attack, or tearing of the aorta. Other causes of chest pain that may not require immediate medical intervention include spasm of the esophagus, gallbladder attack, or inflammation of the chest wall. An accurate diagnosis is important in providing proper treatment
to patients with chest pain.
Angina (angina pectoris - Latin for squeezing of the chest) is chest discomfort that occurs when there is a decreased blood oxygen supply to an area of the heart muscle. In most cases, the lack of blood supply is due to a narrowing of the coronary arteries as a result of arteriosclerosis.

Angina is usually felt as:

  • Pressure, heaviness, tightening, squeezing, oraching across the chest, particularly behind the breastbone.
  • This pain often radiates to the neck, jaw, arms, back, or even the teeth.

Patients may also suffer:

  • Indigestion
  • Heartburn
  • Weakness
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Cramping.

Angina usually occurs during exertion, severe emotional stress, or after a heavy meal. During these periods, the heart muscle demands more blood oxygen than the narrowed coronary arteries can deliver. Angina typically lasts from 1 to 15 minutes and is relieved by rest or by placing a nitroglycerin tablet under the tongue.

Nitroglycerin relaxes the blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. Both rest and nitroglycerin decrease the heart muscles demand for oxygen, thus relievingangina.
